The 5 Best Things To Do After Installing Joomla

If you are new to Joomla, you may be wondering where to start. Here are my top 5 things to do after installing Joomla. Disagree? Let me know what you'd put in the comments.

Security first:

#1. Password Protect /administrator

Take care of security with your site first. Use your hosting provider's control panel and add another level of protection to your Joomla site by password protecting the /administrator directory.

#2. Change admin to different username

By default, Joomla creates the initial Super Administrator with the username of "admin." Make your site more secure by changing this to something else by visiting Global Configuration and update the username.

Ok let's move on to things to help us create content:

#3. Switch to the JCE Editor

Joomla 1.5 ships with the TinyMCE 2.0 wsywig editor, which is a significant upgrade from the version shipping with Joomla 1.0. However, there's an even better editor: the Joomla Content Editor (JCE). The latest version has many more features and is easier to use than TinyMCE, especially for new users to Joomla expecting something similar to Microsoft Word. The big features that impress people in my classes is the ability to:

  • Change font size and family
  • Better image controls including margins
  • Easy toggle between HTML and wsywig mode
  • Easily create internal links to other articles
  • Built-in spell check

#4. Turn off Article Parameters

Let me know if you disagree, but I have to turn off the display of "Author Name," "Created Date," and "Modified Date" right away. It just makes the site look cleaner as I start to work with content. You can do this by visiting the Article Manager and clicking Parameters.

Finally, let's round it out with some SEO-ness:

#5. Quick and Easy SEO

Visit Global Configuration and enable Search Engine Friendly URLs. It'll make your URLs more human readable and search engines friendly.

Nice list, but I would take exception to #3. Because of its user-friendliness, our firm has decided to go with the WYSIWYG Pro editor on all of our sites. The other editors, including JCE, were harder for our clients to learn.

Have you any more information about WYSIWYG Pro? Our site is in development and I installed JCE, but would like to consider WYSIWYG Pro, because JCE behaves unexpected at times.

Hi, I've asked for a review copy--if they come through I'll be sure to review it on the show.
