Episode 16 - Quick Fire Update

Been way too long since the last episode, but here it is! Episode 16 is out. In this episode Mike goes through a bunch of updates, including:

  • Doggy Dish launches a Joomla Podcast. Mike disagrees with them about the best editor—JCE is superior to JoomlaFCK.
  • JCE 1.5.3 comes out with new Word Paste feature. Sounds great.
  • Mike's working on a photo comparision feature—do you have a favorite?
  • Admin Praise2 is out—if you've been frustrated by the admin interface of Joomla, check it out
  • Joomla Admin Mobile—If you have an iPhone, get this app. Let's you administer your sections, categories, articles, users, and menus. Hopefully they can build in support for other Components.
  • New ways to create content for Joomla: ZOO and K2. Use one component to create content, make a download section, events, and more. Right now, K2 is more feature-complete and is free.
  • Looking forward to the additions created by the Google Summer of Code: Front-end editing looks especially great.

Great job Mike! I have used both FCK and JCE and would have to say JCE rocks! Would love to have Andrew Eddie on the show because I'm sure we'll hear about some of the development on 1.6.

Nice work Mike. I just came across your podcast the other day and had a listen. Good stuff. I agree with almost everyone about JCE being the best. My only comments on Admin praise would be, although it looks great and has lots of cool features, switching from the default can lead to problems for clients who try to look up info on how to do things in the admin. I agree that it would be cool to see Joomla go to a drag and drop front end only set up for most users. I still think there should be a backend, but would like to see you be able to modify modules from the front end.

Keep up the good work. I'll be listening.

@Spacepyrit: Thanks for listening to the show. I too am looking forward to "grilling" Andrew Eddie about J 1.6 smilies/smiley.gif

@Dan: Thanks for digging the show. Good point about using Admin praise with clients. It's true that if they go searching for help outside of you, they'll probably get confused. I suppose it's better to be used by someone that already knows Joomla well and is comfortable with a UI change.

I must say that you have some great episodes/content.

I would like to giev my input as to which photo galery I like to use, which is JoomGallery. It has some really great features. My main reason for liking it is, that you have the option not to use the javascript popup for images, categories, and many more.

Good luck and keep up the good work smilies/smiley.gif
